This is an unfortunate side effect some people have as a result of that particular surgery. I have read on this and other forums that people can eventually, sometimes, teach themselves to swallow so that this does not happen or so it happens less often. Other than that I don't know of any solution.

Also be sure that your friend has a sleep test in a sleep lab to see how effective the surgery really was. The success rate for a UPPP is not high. Sometimes all that is eliminated is snoring, so people think they have been "cured" of OSA, but they have not -- and they don't know it because they are not snoring. I'm not wishing this on your friend, of course, but he needs to find out if he has not done so already.
