Posted by Been There Done That on April 18, 2000 at 11:14:44:Many folks with OSA have been treated with Prozac or Zoloft prior to diagnosis because of depression. Being able to sleep better often lessens the need for these types of drugs after a few months of CPAP treatment. Many folks with OSA also have hypertension and take meds for that.
I just came back from the doctor. I'm weaning off the Zoloft and feeling rather doggy--turns out the blood pressure is now too low, so I'm cutting back on one of my BP meds. The doc says meds like Zoloft and Prozac elevate blood pressure slightly, so when you wean off, it's common for the blood pressure to be too low--but after several weeks, it might come back up a little before restabilizing.
If you are hypertensive and decide to go off Zoloft or Prozac, be sure your doctor knows. Keep track of your blood pressure readings for a couple of weeks, and if you begin to feel doggy or light-headed, let the doctor know! You might be over-medicating yourself for hypertension and thinking it's the apnea again--wrong!
