CFS on the Golden Girls

Posted by Doug H. on April 18, 2000 at 17:40:21:

In a recent rerun of "The Golden Girls," Dororthy (Bea Arthur) complains of being tired all the time, and is running to doctors fruitlessly. Finally, after being given the royal runaround, she does find a doctor who diagnoses CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). Although this is not exaclty the illness of this forum, it sounds hauntingly like many of the postings here. In particular, I identified with her relief at being diagnosed, rather than having the symptoms remain unexplained.

Anyhow, this episode is a tremendous service to people with sleep problems. If somebody sees this episode and looks for CFS, it's more likely that they'll receive a correct diagnosis whether it's CFS, Sleep Apnea, or anything else. The center where I was diagnosed, is now called a Sleep/Wake disorders Center. It makes sense for the same doctors to diagnose CFS as other sleep/wake disorders. Since the symptoms are so similar, the same patients need to be screened for both.
