Perhaps we need to make a big distinction here: when a trach is medically necessary (end-stage disease, imminent risk of death), it is a wise thing to do (don't fight it--you'll live)--but asking for a trach before you've exhausted all the other possibilities (or because you fear having your tonsils out) "might be"/is unwise because it is not necessary to save your life and would expose you to many more health risks.
If weight is a problem, a trach will buy you time to lose that weight, get diabetes under control, whatever. It is a means, not an end.
To those facing the decision to trach or not trach--the Internet, and the advice found on it, is a tool. It is not a substitute for individualized health care evaluation. We here can provide you with anecdotal experience, emotional support, and maybe a few links to clinical literature, but we CANNOT evaluate your individual medical condition. You MUST work these issues out with the help of medical professionals and your family/support net. To base a medical decision on what you read here might be suicide.
