back flow after surgery

My boyfriend had the uvulaplasty surgery several months ago for sleep apnea and now he frequently chokes on water, other liquids, and food going down the wrong way. Violent choking episodes that scare everyone in the restaurant... Does anyone have any suggestions on how to ease or eliminate these choking spells? Thanks
