coughing-Part 2 - (lengthy)

Posted by Jim (MO) on September 18, 1998 at 08:31:08:

Does anyone have a suggestion for me? My pulmonary doctor and my internal medice doctor told me that the cough was due to the cold dry air of the CPAP! Two times yesterday once at 4:00am and again at 5:30pm I was trying to sleep and woke up chocking and gasping for air. I could not get any breath into my body and I just about passed out until I could get myself calmed down to take little tiny breaths. I had talked to my pulmonary doctor on Wednesday and he said he was going to prescribe a heated humidifier and change my pressure to 12. Which was done yesterday. I had a chest x-ray done that came back clear. I have been coughing so hard that it is really starting to hurt my body(upper arms, head, back)etc. they told me that they couldnt put me on any kind of cough medicine because it was not due to a cold, allergy, or infection or anything like that. I do know however that all of the coughing has caused more swelling in my windpipe. So much so that I can no longer lay down. Whenever I lay down even with the CPAP my airway is collapsing and I cant breathe. I slept an entire 15 minutes last night sitting up in my recliner. What can I do? The emergency room doctor told me that normally they would give a cough syrup with codeine in it, but due to the other medications I am on they couldnt prescribe anything for me. Am I just supposed to wait until this cough decides to go away? Do you know of anyhing else I can have them check? The emergency room doctor told me to only come back if I started to cough up blood. Am I crazy? I am just about at my wits end and dont know what else to do. I have been seeing doctors now for the past 6 weeks and spent a little over $16,000 and feel worse than when I started. I am only 26 years old and is this what I have to look forward to for the rest of my life? I am trying to keep a good attitude, but it is becoming more and more difficult. I have only slept a total of about 6 hours in the past 8 days. Any and all adivce is greatly appreciated.

Thank you to everyone on this forum for the excellent advice and continued support you give.

Jim
