Posted by Don Bradley (Seattle,WA) on September 22, 1998 at 11:18:44:The ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) of sleep is a much disfavored theory of sleep onset, control and function.
However, I find that if I take a whopping dose of vitamin E just prior to going to sleep, I sleep better, awaken fewer times and awaken feeling more refreshed. If the 'apnea' episodes are occuring the oxygen desaturation probably also occurs...but there does not seem to be any effet on neuronal functioning due to the oversupply of vitamin E protecting the lipids of the neuronal membranes from being damaged by free radicals during the hypoxic or reperfusion stages of oxygen deprivation.I realize that this 'free radical theory' is not currently invogue and that there are good and substantial reasons for that, but the excessive amounts of vitamin E are certainly working for me...while I struggle to get a CPAP prescription .
