long-term effects of red marks on nose

Posted by Been There Done That on May 08, 2000 at 08:52:55:

I started with a Mirage nasal, which works fine but slides around on my very oily skin; have tried an ADAM, which also works fine, but the constant airflow gave me an ulcer inside my nose (that ulcer has dogged me most of my life, but it cleared up with a nasal mask and returned with the pillows); and am now trying a Simplicity, which I like for its small "footprint" on my face.

My questions have to deal with those red marks the masks sometimes leave on the nose. The Mirage gives me a red mark high on the bridge of my nose, around a sharp bump I have from a broken nose. I don't experience any real soreness from the mask, but my glasses sit near that nose bump and red mark, causing discomfort and tenderness. The Simplicity works great, but the red mark is halfway down my nose--nothing touches it, so it doesn't hurt. The skin isn't ulcerated or raw, just very pink (like from a sunburn). Provided that I take care and don't develop an open sore on the bridge, are there any long-term effects from living with the red mark? For instance, I'm one of those folks with red spider veins on one of the nares of my nose (had them pre-CPAP). Will I get more of those veins from the mask? When I awaken in the morning, that red mark on the bridge seems a tad swollen or puffy (I notice it, nobody else has). Will it scar up on me (you know, like a fighter who has had his nose or ear hit too many times--it gets bigger from bleeding into the cartilege)? Anyone who has worn heavy earrings for years knows the lobes eventually stretch out under the weight. Also, as we age and tissues soften and suffer the effects of gravity, the nose actually "grows" (not really, it just seems longer). Will pressure from the mask on the lower bridge of the nose accentuate that?

[Folks, please don't tell me to try the Breeze--that's not the issue here. Thanks.]
