I too have a simplicity nasal mask but cannot be on my back--I can't breathe even when awake. It took me a while, but I found that I can sleep with minimual leakage on my side if I tilt my head back somewhat (instead of having chin to chest like I used to sleep). If I tilt my head back, the leaks seem to stop for some reason. If I put my chin down towards my chest, I get massive leaks--and I'm also more prone to snore this way which defeats the purpose of using CPAP.
I also found that the straps should only be tightened so the leaks stop and only do the tightening while laying down. If the mask is too tight, you will have different kinds of problems--sore nose, (I actually rubbed the skin off the bridge of my nose), strap marks on the face, red welts where the mask was, etc. Since I had an open sore on my nose, I used a bandage to cover it up when using the mask. I still wear a bandage (new one every night) even though I don't need it for the sore any more. I have less leaks using the bandage and don't have to tighten the mask so much.
The makeup of your face--fat, bone structure, width and length of face, size of nose, facial hair, etc.--will make a big difference on the type of mask you use and how you sleep. Even the size of the mask can make a difference. Possibly going to a smaller or larger one will help. Keep experimenting. Eventually you'll find something that works or will find that you will get used to the noise and can sleep through the noise of the leaks and the machine.
Good sleeping.
