I have had no change in sense of smell or taste since the septoplasty. If anything I can smell a little better now.
The choice of splints or packing is usually determined by the perferences of the surgeon and the severity of the deviation, and is usually decided during the operation -- and not by you. My doc had a hard time with that part of the operation (the septum kept springing back to its old position) so chose packing to hold the bone in place better.
Intubation is commonly performed during general anesthesia. In my case it gave me a whopping sore throat for several days and stretched out my uvula (great for an apnea patient, right?) temporarily, but this is not true for everyone.
"Insta Trank" is actually "InstaTrak." This is not anesthesia at all, but a surgical method from a company named Visualization Technology Inc. for what is called "image guided sinus surgery." This is, I am almost sure, not used for septoplasties. At least the company literature does not mention it.
An electromagnetic tracking system attached to the operating instruments traces the movement of the tool on a monitor showing an image of your entire sinus system. But looking at the monitor, the surgeon can see exactly where the tips of the instruments are at all times even though they are inside your head. My surgeon used this system, which calls for specialized training, when removing nasal polyps -- after the septoplasty but during the same operation.
I never had sinus infections prior to the sinus surgery, but I did have severe nasal polyps that filled my sinuses and affected my breathing. I recently had a bad cold that affected my sinuses, but it went away in time.
You do realize that a septoplasty is not sinus surgery, right? The septoplasty is to straighten the bone running up the center of your nose. Mine was in the shape of a spoon.
