I agree about the difficulties of defining severity in simple terms.

My sleep test showed an extremely high number of episodes per night (in worst 5% said the Dr). However, he then pointed to the graph and in particular brain acticity-arousal and oxygen levels.

He said that although the apnoea was severe, my brain began the arousal process with only a very small drop in oxygen, and therefore I "aroused" very quickly, so that oxygen levels did not fall as low as in many other people. I was therefore having very many, very short episodes.

How you add things like this up into "severity" is therefore more complex than it seems. For example, the length and impact of episodes must be important.
