As to the weight issue: losing weight helps for some people, but does no good at all (at least in regards OSA) for others. It depends on what is causing the obstruction to your breathing. If the 40 pounds you have put on include a lot of weight around your neck and chin, you might be a candidate for at least lessening your problem by losing weight. However, trying to do so while sleep deprived can be very difficult, so I would wait until you get the sleep problem figured out (and are on cpap if needed), before trying to set up any weight-loss program.
