New to Apnea--need advice

Posted by Gary on July 26, 2000 at 08:28:25:

I am new to the concept of apnea, but I seriously beleive I may be a suferer. A few days ago I was taking a nap and woke up three times gasping for air. I sensed that I had stopped breathing--but how can you tell when you are asleep? It did not seem that my airway was blocked, more like I was shutting down my breathing mechanism. Is that a neurological problem? I know this has happened before. Sometimes I have to scream my self out of sleep, because I become conscious but I cannot move.

I also have been increasingly lethargic, tired, fatigued and very dizzy through the day. I never feel rested. I sense breathlessness during the day. I am 35.

What should I do if I suspect I have apnea?

Do most doctors treat this issue fairly?

Do most health plans cover oxygen masks? How expensive are they?

What is the next-best remedy?

What if it is a neurological problem?

Please share your advice and whatever info is helpful to a novice on apnea.

Thanks very much.

Gary
