I am not sure if you understand what the effects of your advice could be...
Susspend CPAP because of a stuffy nose.... could be very serious for me (and others). My sleep study blood O2 saturation dropped to 43% (and I am told that people who drop below 40% rarely come out of it by themselves and die in bed: and the sleep technition told me that he was getting out of his chair and preparing to come and resusutate me when I popped out of it).
It is interesting to note that while this low Blood O2 event was happening; that my mind was in an unusual form of wakefullness and I remember that I was just "watching" my body. Mind numing to have the low blood O2 linked to this altered mental state because I had experienced that mental state and the "watching" experience several times before. Thus I conclude that I have approached near death at least several times due to apnea.
Sleep Apnea in general is far to dammaging even at normal levels for me to even suggest to anyone that they suspend CPAP for any reason. I shudder to think of anyone blindly suggesting without knowing the paticulars of the patient that they suspend CPAP.
Full face mask, or the new Oral device are the solutions to nose problems of many kinds; and I believe should be made available to patients for just those reasons.
I insisted on a Full Face Mask up front both because I had a stuffed nose (which lasted for the first 3 weeks of CPAP) and also because I have other nose problems which have forced me to be a lifelong mouth breather.
bransia: I am sure you are otherwise a nice person and we all make mistakes. All I ask is that in your professional practice that you consider the effects or your advice on the "worst case" person before you give it.
For the other folks out there; know that long term I will be pursuing some form of throat surgery to reduce my OSA as I figure that my life may literally depend on it.
