Can't get more than 6 hours of sleep

Posted by DavidS on August 02, 2000 at 19:48:54:

For a change, I'm posting my own question.

I've been on CPAP for a year. It works very well for me: I keep the mask on all night; I don't breathe through my mouth. I mostly feel 1000% better.

I do have one problem: I only sleep 6 hours. I wake up needing to use the bathroom, and even though I still feel sleepy, I can't get back to sleep.

Mostly, this isn't a problem, though I do feel as though I need more sleep. I need an occasional nap, and I've had trouble on long-distance car rides.

I have lost weight--about 35 lbs--and I'm exercising now (during the year I found out that I'm diabetic...any more good news awaiting me?). I have been able to stop taking blood pressure medication.

Any thoughts on why I'm not sleeping the regulation 8 hours? Any ideas on how to extend the time? I've tried going to bed earlier...it just means I wake up earlier (i.e., last night: 11 p.m. - 5 a.m.). I know not everybody needs the same amount of sleep, but I'm not feeling entirely rested.
