Posted by Marie on August 08, 2000 at 06:16:45:Ok, now I am really concerned. I was diagnoised last fall with sleep apnea and have been on therapy since. My husband recently had a sleep study done in July and diagnoised with sleep apnea. He should be getting his machine this week. I know he will be compliant cause he sneaks naps with my machine! Now, my youngest son has mentioned to us that he thinks he may have it also. The symptons are all there, but as a 19 year old, he just stayed out late and slept in til noon, the typical teenage thing to do and we didn't really think about him having it until a few weeks ago when we were visiting family and all had to sleep in the same room.
So yesterday, I got him in to see our PCP. The PCP was giving me a "cool shoulder" so to speak, I think because I was so adament and concerned about my son's breathing during sleep and lethargy during the day and he (PCP) was not sure if I was "pulling his leg" or something. Quite frankly I probably know more about sleep apnea, it's symptons and what a person sounds like during sleep if they have it then the PCP. Thanks to all of you, our sleep doctor in Seattle told us, when we were in for husbands consult after sleep study, that we were probably the most informed and knowledgable patients he had. Hmmm....that sounded like maybe we know what we are talking about, huh?
Anyway, back to son's situation. PCP decided to do an overnight pulse/oxyemeter (spelling?) test on son. Son is currently "plugged in" as I type and the oxygen level is bouncing between 67 and 72. (worried mom here has been checking it hourly) At one point it got as low as 60 for about 30 seconds. Need I say more about that...
Now comes the cruch time. Son is going away to Phoenix for schooling the first of October. That is a month and a half from now. Getting him in for a consult with the sleep doctor will be easy to do, but I am concerned about getting the sleep study and the follow up consult done before he leaves for school. Hence why I have been awake since 3 am trying to figure out solutions to problems that may not even exist (at least yet).
Gee, I sorry to dump these silly worries on those of you who have taken the time to read all this. But thanks to all of you and Sandman with this forum, my family will be healthier for it. I guess I should just talk with our sleep doctor and see what he suggests. Thanks you all for listening.
