There should be no air escaping anywhere BUT the exhaust ports. Even a little air seeping out around the edges of the mask is less than ideal.

If it's available to you, I suggest that you try the Mirage mask. I was also given the Respironics mask at first and I had a lot of trouble getting it leak-free. The Mirage is better for me. You don't need nearly as much tension on the straps to keep it from leaking.
