I live on t'other side of the world and it's cold, (nothing like as cold as when I lived north of Chicago) but very low humidity also.

I use a vaporiser in the room at night to raise the ambient humidity and it seems to help. You need one that will go all night - the first one I bought in the US only went for about 4 hours! You can also lay wet towels around the room as well as the vapouriser.
