Most sleep people have long known about the relationship between GERD and OSA. Also about the improvement in GERD when the OSA is treated with PAP. There are 2 theories on why PAP treats GERD, the most popular is that the increase in negative intrathoracic pressure caused by PAP "sucks" the stomach acid up into the esophagus. By normalizing this pressure with PAP, the stuff stays in the stomach. The other theory (fairly new) is that PAP causes a mechanical compression of the esophagus, thus preventing reflux. Either way, it works so well that studys have shown that people with GERD but NO OSA who wear PAP at night can end the reflux.
