The Fisher & Paykel heated humidifiers can go bone dry with the thermostat set at any temperature and not damage the heater or the water reservoir (any of them, including the aluminum-bottom "disposable" one). This straight from the mouth of an F&P customer service rep to my ears.

I don't know about the Sullivan humidifier, but I'd be pretty surprised if this would be a problem.
