Is it also possible that the effort to breathe is putting enough stress on the abdomen that it's forcing gastric juices into the upper GI tract? Then once PAP is in use and the apneas stop, there wouldn't be all that heave-ho-ing causing things to make their way into the esophagus. Just a thought.
