Watch the DME (longish)

Posted by PDX Dale on August 09, 2000 at 20:45:16:

I just got back from the DME (durable medical equipment) associated with the sleep center I went to, and traded a loaner machine for a CPAP for me to keep. When I got the new machine, the sales rep said that since I already had a hose (I got it with the loaner) I didn't need the one that came with the new machine. So she removed it and gave me the CPAP without a hose, even when I mildly protested.

NOW - here's the rub:

My insurance company is, thankfully, buying the CPAP for $157 per month for a total of over $1,400 from the DME. I found the exact same machine through a web retailer for less than half, but it isn't an approved retailer by my insurance carrier. So right off the bat the DME is already screwing me and my insurance company by 50% or more.

I just looked at the initial invoice when I got the loaner from the DME, and I was charged $45 for the hose that should have been included for free and $145 for a mask that is widely available at $80. And now, they steal the hose that was included with the new machine and will probably sell it to someone else for another $45.

Can anyone say profit?!?!?!?!? :-{

Now, I face the task of trying to get the DME to return the missing hose (so I have a replacement, if the current one is damaged). Wish me luck.
