While the diaphragm action might contribute to the need for frequent potty breaks during the night, there's a more elegant explanation:
In the deeper stages of sleep, a hormone is secreted that slows the production of urine. People sleeping normally therefore don't need frequent trips to the WC. When sleep is disrupted, the hormone is not released, and off you go!
