Well, I sympathise Baz. My husband was diagnosed with apnea a bit over a year ago, in July '99. His first visit with a sleep doc was in October. His first sleep study was scheduled for MAY 2000. He got lucky and got in early...in December. By which time we were both in a state of nearly total collapse. His next vist, to receive the results of his study, was scheduled for 3 months later. He was told to go ahead, get a machine and set it somewhere around pressure 10, he should be okay until they figured out what it should be. When he asked the doc if there were any affects from having it too high, doc said 'not that he knew'. We found out differently. His next sleep study, to set the pressure properly, was May 2000.
We have struggled with this issue of setting our own pressure for almost 6 months. We didn't really have a choice. He is not scheduled for a check on his pressure for another TWO YEARS.
So yes, we adjust the pressure as needed. There is NO ongoing dialogue with the doctor about what he should or shouldn't be doing. We are looking into information on autopaps and anything else we can find for this very reason as we feel it is vital that SOMETHING measures changes in his apnea.
So...anyone with any helpful suggestions at all is more than welcome in my book. Living outside the states means that conditions such as monitoring can be very very different and how much you control the course of your own treatment is also very different.
