Okay, lets look at this logically. My husband has lived most of his life (from what we have been able to determine) with sleep apnea. He has had one actual choking episode and that was due to factors we can control. So... he isn't going to wake up because we turned it down? don't think so... he isn't going to wake up because we turned it up? Well, the doctor (yes from a recognised sleep centre) said it shouldn't be a problem... the same doctor who GUESSED what the setting should be originally, wrote a prescription out for that setting and had my husband on it for 6 months. It was not the setting that was finally titrated for by the sleep lab either. Gee whiz, guess what? He survived it. The same doctor who said, if it isn't working, go ahead and change it until it feels about right.
So... what we would LIKE to be able to do is have valid information on his condition to make APPROPRIATE adjustments, yes. Diabetics, for a large part, control their own course of treatments, including the injection of insulin if they need it. So do many other patients with many other diseases. They are monitored by medical centres but on a day to day basis, they are the boss. No one knows his or her own disease as well as a patient. And doctors are often busy, harried individuals trying to do the best they can in systems that often are not ideal for the patient. I respect them immensely. I also understand the practical limitations they work under.
I am not advocating playing around with your settings every day, going up, going down like a yoyo. Personally, we are looking at Autopaps because they seem to be the most reasonable solution to the fact that OSA patients DO have daily changes in their conditions due to health, weight, medications and other factors. I happen to believe in looking at ALL alternatives to providing the best self care possible because I don't happen to be rich enough to have a doctor in my bedroom every night to take care of me or my husband.
So tell me... do we listen to the doctor who said, hey, adjust! Or do we listen to you?
Last note: We do not live in the United States. Your views on appropriate responses to our medical system are not our views. We have chosen to go through a public health sleep centre and we recognise and accept the limitations of doing so. We also recognise and accept the benefits of doing so.
