Hi Michael,
You could use a hose the same size as the port, BUT, the physics actualy state that the water will go up the straw in porportion to the size of the chamber under preasure. That means that if the chamber in 100mm across and the tube is 22mm across, then the you need to calculate how much the water in the chamber was pushed down & how much water was pushed up the straw & algebraicaly add the ratios. By keeping the straw small, about the size of a drinking straw, the error is so small that you don't have to bother with it :-)
Also because the water in the chamber is being pushed down a little, you can't just place the bottom of the straw right at the water line because then as the water went down air would escape up the straw.
