Is it possible that you were breathing through your mouth? The mouth dryness is a common symptom of this.

If you're breathing through your mouth (without a full face mask), the CPAP isn't effective, and you could have been experiencing sleep apnea again.

There's some indication that after you start XPAP your body is less tolerant of apneas...

You should probably talk to your doctor, because there are other possible issues, like anxiety/panic attacks, etc.

But check out the mouth breathing first.
