apnea and MS

Posted by William Roberts on August 31, 2000 at 12:59:59:

I was diagnosed with MS two years ago (at the age of forty-eight ). Since that time , I have been put on a number of prescriptions . Over the past two years my condition has slowly deteriorated . Ihave lost the hearing in one ear and partially in the other ; my left leg is usable with a brace ; and I have suffered from what I thought was chronic fatigue . WRONG .Ayear ago I went for a sleep study and was correctly diagnosed with sleep apnea . They fitted me with a CPAP machine that night , but they could never get it to work for me . The technicians appeared to be frustrated but no more than I was . They used every strap and every method they knew (changing concentrations , etc. ),all to no avail . I continued to stop breathing at the same rate with or without the CPAP . This went on all night . To make matters worse , when the doctor , who was supposed to arrive at 7:30 A.M.,had not shown up or called by 9:30 A.M.,I left ; and Iwas not happy . The doctor called me that night (never apologized )and told me if I couldn't sleep with my mouth shut , then he could not help me . Since my mouth was strapped shut from early on in the sleep study , I thanked him for his time and wished him a good night's sleep .I received word a week later that this doctor was no longer associated with that sleep clinic .Now , I have gone to another sleep disorder clinic . My second sleep study had much the same results as the first one ,except they also tried a BiPAP and a nasal canula , all with no success . I cannot give specific data concerning these tests , but it appears that I have a form of central apnea . It seems that the nerves controlling breathing during sleep have been affected by the MS .Everytime I go from the ffirst sleep stage to the next , my breathing just shuts down .No blockage of the airway . During the sleep test , I never got passed the first sleep stage . I am going back in for a different study Labor Day night ,and we are hoping to make some progress with this , the most devastating symptom of MS that I have encoutered to date .I have gotten a lot off my chest with this message , and Iwelcome any responce . Thanks .
