Posted by Patrick Richards on September 11, 2000 at 09:53:22:I usually hang out at the sleep disorders newsgroup but since I am considering surgery I thought I would post here and start reading this forum again.
I have used cpap for the last 20 months without any success. I wear it all night and wake up unfreshed. I had 3 follow up sleep studies which show unknown arousals and that my deep sleep has now disappeared and which was a hour on my first study.
It appears that the cpap knocks out my deep sleep. I have tried autocpap and bipap and been at different pressures.
I have tried provigil, sleeping pills, antidepressants and a dental device. One of the dental devices I tried was the silent nite. The one I am trying now is adjustable only by the dentist and it is only half of the silent nite. Not sure if distance in jaw being brought forward make that much of a difference. Since I have seen a few different dentists, they have stated that the silent nite has helped some people and I have felt nothing.
Now I have a appointment with Dr. Riley of Stanford for an evaluation since I need some relief and I had taken some time off for work and need to go back to work (my current job let me go, which is alright). But without relief I doubt that I could get and keep a job, my awareness level is poor.
I had seen Dr. Black at Stanford and he had mentioned that the cpap does disturb some people's sleep. My studies show unknown arousals or changes in stages of sleep which number in the hundreds.
According to my sleep book arousals is a change in sleep state to a light stage which is exactly what happens to me. The last study the tech said every time I went into deep sleep I get knocked out. Unfortunately the book says arouals disorders are namely: sleepwalking, sleep terror and confusional arousals but mine is cpap. The treatment for the other arousals I have taken (klonopin) or not taken provigil to see it them help.
When I first started cpap in January of last year I noticed maybe a 30% improvement for 2 weeks and then nothing and have noticed no improvement of any kind.
If I sleep without cpap I don't really notice much difference but Dr. Black said for health reasons to continue to use it.
