Richard:
The doctors don't tell you everything about a UPPP. In a recent document from the Naval Hospital at Bethesda, MD, as a follow up to UPPP surgeries performed there, the people who had a very low apnea hypopnea index (AHI) faired well with the UPPP. Those with moderate and severe did not fair well and required CPAP after the surgery. If you AHI is below 20 you may do well. If it is above 20 you probably won't and you will still need CPAP, so don't rule it out.
There are a lot of things that the UPPP will change and your sleep apnea may not be one of them.
The UPPP will affect your speech; you won't be able to blow up balloons without pinching your nose; reflux from regurgation will get into your nasal passage. If these have not been explained in full by your physician they should be.
Remember, UPPP is not just simple surgery. This is major surgery and you are at the same level of risk.
Hope this helps you make an informed decision.
Thanks
