My Sleep Study - Surprising results!

Posted by Ed on October 21, 1998 at 12:05:35:

Thank you all for your responses to my first post yesterday. They were very helpful!

My first sleep study was last night, and the results were a bit surprising. This was supposed to be a full night study, and I was to come back for another night to be titrated on the CPAP if my doctor prescribed it. Well, after about two hours, the techs woke me up and told me they had decided to go ahead with the CPAP. This morning, they filled me in on just a few of the details. The RT told me that at the time they woke me, I was taking 5-6 breaths per minute, stopping after EVERY BREATH. I acheived REM sleep once (after two hours) and my blood oxygen level at that point was in the 70% range. This, she told me, is when I met their criteria for using the CPAP without a doctor's orders. I tolerated the CPAP relatively well, and they titrated it to an effective level (which they did not tell me). Luckily, one of the techs uses CPAP at home, so he was able to fit me with a relatively comfoftable mask, and help me get acclimated. I only slept with the mask on for about 4 or 5 hours, but I actually can tell a difference today! Not that I couldn't still take a nap at any moment, but I'm definitely less drowsy than usual.

Anyway, I'm playing the waiting game now. Four weeks until my follow-up appointment with my doc, then however long it takes to actually get the CPAP machine. I'm hoping Santa will deliver it personally!
