newbie checking in....

Made the first call to a sleep doc today....we'll see!

I am 32 y/o and generally in good health, with the exception of being about 30 lbs overweight and a gradually increasing problem with feeling tired. For most of my adult life, I've craved more sleep. On the days when I sleep in all I want, I wake up tired from sleeping too much. I can usually nap anytime I have a quiet half hour, but occasionally have trouble falling asleep at night. A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with low blood pressure, and some of my symptoms are consistent with that -- needing lots of sleep, having a difficult time waking up, generally just feeling BAD in the mornings.

The posts about dreams interested me-- I hardly ever remember dreaming when I wake up.

2 years ago I took a new job that came along with an hour-long commute. For a while I thought my car had a carbon monoxide leak because I would have episodes of intense sleepiness where I was fighting to stay awake. I ruled out CO, and eventually these seemed to go away when I got used to the commute. Now and then (infrequently-- maybe a rash of them with 3-4 month periods ok in between) they recur and have begun happening at work during meetings where I need to be alert and functioning.

My husband notices more pronounced problems (noisy, choking/gasping irregular snoring) when I'm fighting colds or my annual August allergy attack. He has recently turned to earplugs in order to get a good night's sleep.

I still have my tonsils which most doctors assure my are huge. They swell noticeably with any cold or allergy symptoms. I've resisted advice saying that having a tonsillectomy will "fix" my problem because my mother makes the same noises while sleeping and has had hers out. She blames post-nasal drip.

I have had some luck with the "anti-snore" pillows. I forget the brand name but they're sold through Brookstone and are made of some kind of foam/gel stuff-- conforms to the shape of your head, is firmer than a regular pillow, and is shaped to support your neck...

Just wanted to say hi and ask if anyone can recommend a great dr. in the Chicago area. I've placed a call to a Dr. Phyllis Zee, chosen because 1) she's on my medical plan 2) associated with Northwestern University Hospital 3) the clinic is ASDA accredited.

Thanks!

Nicola
