Actually, the shell rests on that area between my upper lip and my nose (I cannot remember what it is called), too. It doesn't bother me because the lower edge of my mask pretty much rested there, too, so I got used to it. If I were to try and get it to sit differently, it would mash in the pillows and pull up my nose--ouch! So I guess it is suppose to be this way. But I am not sure if I am "doing it right", either. However, it doesn't leak.
