Posted by MamboDog on September 27, 2000 at 16:42:11:Last month, I participated in a three-week sleep study researching the relationship between high blood pressure and sleep apnea. The protocol was aggressive, requiring three 24 hr. monitoring sessions. Real lab-rat stuff, but I learned about sleep apnea, high-blood pressure, and, unfortunately, that I suffer severe OSA, as well. For many years, I believed I suffered from depression and that I was one of God’s least motivated creatures. (I’m 42 now and I remember being an 8-year-old kid looking forward to summer vacation because then I could…get more sleep.) After one week of CPAP, I suspect that I have been duped for 35+ years on both these accounts. I share the following with my fellow newbie CPAPers.
I notice that the “hangover” feeling is absent in the AM and my throat doesn’t feel swollen either. Vision is sharper. I have a coffee buzz feeling behind my eyes; it’s not unpleasant and I tell myself that it is the PowerUp of a dormant mind. I have increasing patience. Once, (2cd day) I felt dizzy, like I had blown up balloons for someone’s 100th birthday party. The feeling lasted all day. However, that night, I had to force myself to close the book and turn in; whereas before, I always conked out and someone else turned out the light. I was up before my 8-year-old son last weekend, for the first time in his whole life! The afternoon sleep sag is improving, but my short-term memory and concentration are still hosed. I snore if I’m on my back and will see the doc tomorrow about that.
Overall, I feel better - more like a person, instead of a Dream about a person. Such clarity now as I look back over 30 years and understand many things in the light of my recent knowledge. I have so much hope for continued improvement and, consequently, so much fear of being disappointed. The more I come out of the fog, the more I realize how little of Life I have settled for. Hope escalates and I’m using all my might and strength to make this work.
