Your self description sounds just like one of my best friends - smoker, 30's (now 40's), snorer, not overweight. She finally got a sleep study and is now on CPAP.
Don't put it off til you can't stay awake during the day!
The apnea is more likely to cause high blood pressure that may shorten your life than to not wake up from the apnea. But drinking or taking sleeping medications prior to sleeping might prevent you from waking up to breathe when you need to.
There are other possible reasons for waking up short of breath, but they should all be diagnosed and treated.
