Really good description Keith, but apneas don't necessarily wait for REM sleep to hit you, they can occur at any time during sleep. They often prevent you from getting into the later stages of sleep including REM.
For those that get to REM sleep, this is when the worst apneas occur. That is why some folks continue to have apneas after starting CPAP. They are titrated but have little time during REM, and consequently don't experience their worst apneas during the study. Then during our normal use we get the bad ones and don't have enough pressure to prevent them.
