For sure. It's Ritalin. I believe the generic name is methylphenidate; but, keep in mind that I flunked college chemistry as I kept falling asleep during the 8:00 AM class.
Had a prescription for ritalin for several years as treatment of idiopathic hypersomnolence as diagnosed via multiple sleep latency test. 10mg extended release plus 5mg in the morning followed by 10mg in the afternoon, not to be taken after 2:00PM. Usual dosage, from what I have read in a journal dating back to 1995 is 20 to 60 mg a day.
It kept me awake at the wheel and alert enough to remain employed. Only problem is that as it wore off during the day, I'd go splat. It may be an upper, but what goes up must come down. The down was no fun at all. Also, I was told that I had to be off of it entirely for at least two weeks prior to a sleep study, as it suppressed REM and that there may be a REM "rebound" that would effect the validity of the sleep test.Switched to 400mg of Provigil in April of '99. I much prefer the Provigil, but it took several weeks to get past some of the side effects.
Hope this is of some help. Any particular reason for asking?
Pleasant Dreams
