AutoCPAP choice

John:

I wish it were simple. However, here is the basic choice that everyone has.

The AutoCPAPs can be broken into two major groups. Those that use Flow Limitation as a trigger, and those that don't.

Now without getting into the equipment restrictions, and other issues of how these machines work (see various back post for that information).

Flow limitation is a wonderful trigger and works for most people. The AutoSet T, the 418P, and the Tranquility Auto all use flow limitation as their main trigger. If you have a good flow limitation prcurser - all of these machines will appropriately respond, if you don't they probably won't.

However, flow limitation machines can be falsely triggered - and will run up to the max - by Asthma that is not under control and other lung problems (COPD, etc).

The AutoSet T is the oldest of these machines and many have good results with it. I will note however that in my opinion the 418P (the newest machine) does everyting the AutoSet T does - and a lot more (and the software data output is phenmoninal).

The non-flow limitation machines are the Virtuoso, the 418A, and the AutoAdjust LT. The AutoAdjust LT is in my opinion the standout of this group - especially with it's adustable triggers (all other machines either work for you or they don't, where you can adjust the trigger definitions of the AutoAdjust LT to tune it to you if the default settings do not work: NOTE TO SandMoma / Mate - this is not a change in perscription setting).

If you look back into the last two forums you will find a listing of exactly all the triggers the various machines use, which I posted for someone else.

The big question is which one will work best for you, or for anyone. Good question, and typically cannot be told in advance. While most AutoCPAPs work for most people - for some you need one that matches your individual precuser triggers.

The data I've seen is that most people who have had problems with the flow limitation machines - have luck with the non-flow ones (praticularily the AutoAdjust LT); and most who people who have trouble with the AutoAdjust LT (the Virtuoso has other limitations and is not as versitle as the rest of the machines in its grouping), have success with the flow limitation machines.

From a practical point of view: If buying a new machine I personally would stick with the AutoAdjust LT, the 418P, and the AutoSet T unless you knew that the the other machines would work for you - or you could get one really cheep.

I am sure you know that I feel that having the sofware is a vital componant to both monitor how the machine is working and for troubleshooting problems like mask leaks - however it is also my understanding that you will need a Dr's prescription to get the software. Proper min/max set-up is also vital as many users can tell you. Check my past post for more information.

Hope this clarifies the situation a bit.
