Frightened Sleeping at Night

Posted by Cat on April 04, 2001 at 07:12:18:

I’m becoming obsessed because I think I have sleep apnea and don’t know how to get my doctor to actually listen since I mentioned it to him a few years back and he agreed I probably had it but dropped the subject.

I’ve had a problem with loud, extremely bad snoring for a few years now. Occasionally I would wake up with my heart pounding and shortness of breath, however these incidents have become more frequent and my snoring has become even worse than before. Over the past last few weeks it’s all become extremely bad, I’m unbelievably tired, depressed and lethargic and now I’m really starting to worry and am becoming truly obsessing about all of it.

My snoring has become much much worse, I’m waking myself up all the time and I’m having problems breathing at night. Even if I doze off for a few seconds I begin to snore. It’s truly embarrassing. I’m waking up almost nightly with my heart pounding wildly and the rhythm doesn’t go back to normal right away any more. Then I’m afraid to go back to sleep. Recently I’ve had frequent asthma attacks in the middle of the night, which I used to have only once or twice a year.

However, last night I was truly frightened, for not only did I wake up with my heart pounding but when I tried to take deep breaths my heart started to beat harder and I could feel it pounding in my back. This kept up for about 25 minutes. I don’t know if it’s my obsession or if I am having panic attacks at night and during the day, but I can feel my heart beating all the time, and my pulse has been between 112 - 124 pbm consistently the past few weeks. (I am on blood pressure medication for hypertension.)

I think I just need some support here. I know I have to go to my family doctor and discuss this with him, but I need to know if this is sleep apnea or something else when I speak with him.

Thanks for listening!
