Your doctor really has nothing to lose by refering you for a sleep study. It isn't money out of his pocket for his referal, but I have found that you may have to be firm with him/her and TELL him you want a referal. I would just ask for one and tell him that by having a sleep study you feel it could either narrow it down or rule it out. Remember that "the squeeky wheel gets the grease".
Your condition sounds serious and you need that sleep study! I put mine off for many years. Why, I will never know, because life is better in the last month just since I have had my CPAP machine! (For my husband too, since I no longer wake him with my house-shaking snoring!)
Please, please, please go get that study. I think it will be the first step in the road to recovery.
