Please, do yourself and your wife a favor and go to your doctor and request a sleep study. Snoring is a symptom, an indication that something is wrong, possibly sleep apnea or hypopnea, even if you don't think you have it (neither me nor my husband realized I stopped breathing). Stoping the snoring with products such as these may only mask a more serious problem, if they seem to work at all.
Sleep apnea or hypopnea can cause or agravate serious problems (such as heart, diabetes, ...), often with irreparable damage.
As for the surgery, most of us on this forum have opted for CPAP or a variation rather than surgery. Surgery is not as successful as some doctors might have you think, especially if sleep apnea is moderate to severe. CPAP is not intrusive and you can always opt for surgery later whereas sometimes the surgery may limit your choices for CPAP type solutions later.
