technical correction on flow limitations- the precurser mentioned (distortion of the inhale curve or inspiratory flow)is NOT just flow limitation, it is a possible precurser to near total flow limitation i.e. obstruction, a shape that is likely to preceed flow limitation, unfortunately it is not a 100% reliable precurser. It is an exact measure of the inital flow and its exact SHAPE. To me this important in that they are trying to PREVENT severe flow limitation (hypopneas, less than 50% flow and apneas, less than 75% flow), rather than just responding to it as some machines do. Its much less expensive to measure flow with devices that may distort this initial response and even much more less expensive than trying to do something with this information. The machine does also measure flow and keeps track of the exact volume of the entire system (why they only want certain masks or length hoses) and measures leak rate. I know this for certain as they record this information and you can see it in the printout as hypopneas and apneas which they also define in terms of continuous flow for specific periods of time. Weather this information is actually used or not, to set the machines response, appears to be one of their trade secrets.
