Posted by Worried Wife on June 26, 2001 at 07:58:57:Hello again! As an update to my prevous postings in the last forum I want to let you know that we're aking progress.
Thanks to Reno Tom's chin strap I am now back in my own bed!
I can't thank you all enough for the invaluable information and support I have received from all the previous forums. I only wish I would have been prepared before beginning this journey.Tomorrow I will be accompaning my husband to the first follow-up appointment after beginning CPAP. Here's where we stand now: Over my objections the machine was changed from a 418A set "wide open" to a standard CPAP set at 12. I now have learned that the "wide open" setting along with mask leaks and mouth breathing was probably causing the problems. I wanted to adjust the 418A settings rather than change machnines but the RT at the DME was insistant that the Doctor wanted this done and that changing the pressure settings wouldn't make any difference. I regret not calling the doctor myself before exchanging machines! Now we'll go to this appointment tomorrow with no objective data to evaluate.
Here's my proposal-please! comment on it's validity and make any suggestions that might help me deal with the doctor and the insurance company.
I would like him to prescribe a 418P perhaps with pressure settings between 8 and 13 to start. I would also like the software (asking for the moon, right!)and would propose weekly downloads(I have a color printer)in the beginning for him to evaluate. It seems to me that we're looking at a lifetime of treatment not a cure, therefore the more monitoring that can be done will only be beneficial. As a person in the health profession and an asthmatic, I also know that self monitoring increases patient compliance. As for the costs involved, I am estimating that the cost of the 418P plus software is less than the cost of one sleep study. The insurance company benefits too!
Any Comments?
