I would agree with you 100% on your plan. You might consider approaching your insurance company and see if they will let you purchase a machine on your own. You can probably purchase a 418-A from CPAPman for about the same price as your DME is charging for the plain vanilla CPAP. My insurance wouldn't let me despite the savings, but have read of others being able to do it.

There seems to be a real predudice against the auto-pap machines by some doctors. I have heard of many patients asking for them and the doc says "No way".

The software is VERY expensive to buy, several hundred dollars. But the company will give it free to the DMEs who buy enough machines.

Talk with the doc directly and see if he will sign off on your plan. Maybe he is not as insistent as your DME implies.
