Sleep Deprivation and Cardiovascular Fitness

Posted by j on June 11, 2001 at 20:55:43:

I was wondering if there is a link between sleep deprivation (not specific to apnea)and poor cardiovascular fitness. From what I understand, sleep isn't responsible for physical restoration, but instead only benefits the brain (I read a good explanation of this at http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/hu/groups/sleep/karger.htm. I've also read this in a couple of other places and was told the same by the director of the sleep center at my hospital). Anyway, I've been pretty active for a long time, but one thing that I've always had trouble with is my cardiovascular stamina and I've never been able to improve it much. Does anyone know if there is a link between sleep deprivation and cardiovascual fitness? Thanks a lot.
