Sleep Study failure

Posted by Robert on August 04, 2001 at 13:20:16:

Hi All!
I just had my sleep study done at the County Hospital here in Los Angeles.....it was a complete failure. I was only able to sleep lightly less than 2 hours. They even it seemed terminated the test early out of perhaps frustration with me. The Technician afterwards told me that they got about 1.5 hours of information but NO REM Sleep at all. I thought REM Sleep was necessary for a proper evaluation. Also, he told me that he does not think it's sleep apnea but insomnia....based on the fact that I tossed and turned in an environment that was foreign to me, uncomfortable and simply not my home. Am I the first person who perhaps would need a second sleep study because the first one failed for me because I was nervous etc. and as a result not enough information to complete the study. After the study I came home in the morning and slept 6 hours....poor quality....but that was the total time in the rack.
I am sure the report to my doctor will be "Insomnia" and not sleep apnea. The tech even said you just nore only a little with your mouth wide open.
My friends/girlfriend have told me for years that I snore like a truck and stop breathing at various times in the night. Just for my own curiosity, I taped myself sleeping for the last two nights and although their is alot of "white noise" on the tape it revealed just what I thought. Tons of snoring.....very loud, gurgles, gasps and in general the whole sleep process seemed very labored. Now what to do?? The hospital probably won't re-test me and will just say....sorry....ouch.....I know whatever my problems is.....I have been sleeping poorly for 15 years and very poorly over the last few years........I need to get to the bottom of this.....I think it's time to get away from the County(public) hospital and spend the necessary money in the private setting even if I have to take on debt to do so. I am tired, anxious and depressed.....can't work....and the CPAP machine the county gave me prior to the sleep test to try out is not working.....setting 10....dry mouth.....leaks all over the place with all 3 nasal masks (s,m,l) and chin straps that don't work (mouth breather)....the whole thing is just out of control! I am only 37 and this sleep problem whatever it is has really screwed up my life big time....can't even work now.
HELP.
