Its all part of the spectrum of Sleep Disordered Breathing. It starts with primary snoring and goes all the way to severe OSA. Surgery can be more effective in cases of UARS, depending on the procedure and the surgeon. However, there is little documentation on the long term efficacy of surgery in treating SDB. The few good studies I've seen indicate that within 5 years of surgery most patients have at least returned to their previous level of SDB or higher.
