Anyone experienced back pain with CPAP?

Posted by John on August 17, 2001 at 11:47:31:

In June of this year I had a heart attack during the night. After being released from the hospital, my cardiologist recommended a sleep study. The sleep study confirmed that I had sleep apnea, a contributing factor to my heart attack.

My sleep doctor prescribed a CPAP. It's a GoodKnight 418G and I'm using the Breeze SleepGear with nasal pillows. (I tried the mask and didn't like it.)

A couple of days after I started sleeping all night without taking the headgear off, I started having back pain. My wife would rub my back with sports cream and find muscles knotted up. I consulted with my various doctors and none have a clue as to why I'm having this problem. I've tried everything they recommended...

My cardiologist took away one of the blood pressure and cholesterol pills thinking that I was having muscle cramps as a side effect. That didn't help.

My sleep doctor suggested purchasing a new bed. After spending $1500 on a new mattress and box springs, that didn't help.

My wife has observed no difference in sleep position with and without wearing the headgear, so I don't think it's my sleeping position when using the CPAP.

I just came home from a hospital stay for a second angioplasty/stent procedure. My cardiologist said not to use my CPAP in the hospital. After laying on the rock hard xray table during the procedure, then being flat on my back for another 24 hours, I would have expected my back to hurt, but it didn't. When I came home and used the CPAP, the pain was back.

Now what??? My sleep doctor says back pain isn't a side effect associated with using a CPAP. He was going to do an MRI, but I can't have one for 8 weeks after having a stent put in. (A stent is a small metal tube used after an angioplasty to help the coronary artery remain open.)

Does anyone have any experience to share?

Thanks!

It seems to be associated with the CPAP.
