Its not true that the DME can't afford to purchase better equipment with Medicare reimbursement. Medicare is the highest end payment of any insurance. For example, Medicare allowable may only by $98 per month, but thats paid over 13 or 15 months. Thas $1274-$1470 for the same CPAP machine that the contracted rate with most Managed Care insurance is $800. Plus Medicare allows mask replacement every 3 months, and after the rental caps a service charge every 6 months even if no service is performed. The DME purchases what ever they can get the best bulk price on to get the best profit.
