Hi Jo:
Thanks for the response. I went back on the old forums and found in forum2 there was mention on 8/21/98 of someone using the product, but the discussion was mainly about masks vs. pillows. I read one of your responses that recommended the Mirage mask, and I have also been reading some good things about the comfort of that particular mask (less irritation). I placed a call last Friday to Apria Health to have them check with my insurance carrier (UnitedHealthCare) to see if they will pay for another mask. The mirage is about $135 compared to about $50 for the Respironics Healthdyne mask that I have now. I remember when I picked up the CPAP, they just gave me the mask and told me to "try" it. Being a rookie, I didn't know any better. I sure wish I had found this forum before I actually received the equipment. Oh well, I will see my ENT doctor this Friday, so perhaps I can ask him to prescribe a mirage mask for me if necessary. Regarding the Emu oil, I can understand your concern for the poor emu birds. I searched for information on emu oil, and found some information that is probably not going to please you: "Emu oil comes from the rendered and refined fat of the emu bird. The emu is similiar to an ostrich, a member of the ratite family. Most of the birds are raised in the US by emu farmers, and then sent to be rendered and refined. This type of farming is similiar to cattle farming. One of the things we know about the emu is that they have wonderful immune systems. The emu can be close to death from injury and in a few days be good as new. It is this wonderful healing properties that they pass along through the emu oil. This is why the emu oil is good for so many things."
Sigh..... poor little big birds. If the mirage mask saves my face, perhaps I will save an Emu. (we all knew they couldn't squeeeeeeze the oil out of them, didn't we?)
